Inserting Social Sharing Links

Knowledge Level:

Suggested Skills: HTML, CSS, Social
Objective: Creating campaigns that can be easily shared by recipients is a great way to introduce a social element into your email marketing. While you can use the social campaign to add a social element (reference Step 3 of Establishing Your Campaign Details), you can also follow the steps below to allow your campaigns to be shared by your patrons on Facebook and/or Twitter when they are logged in to those platforms.

Facebook

Take the following URL: " https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u="

And append the public campaign link from social settings
(located in Step 3 of establishing your campaign details).
For example:

So the end result will be:

You can now apply this link to an image or text. When recipients click on the link, if logged in to Facebook, the share dialogue will open.

Note: your public campaign email does not have editable <head> tags and therefore cannot have Facebook's open graph tags to provide metadata for the share dialogue. Facebook's crawler uses an algorithm to locate relevant images and text within your HTML to use. Your campaign's share dialogue content will be subject to this algorithm. You can use Facebook's debugger tool to test your HTML.

Twitter

Take the following URL: " http://twitter.com/share?text="

and append your tweet message with " +" acting as spaces:

" Prepopulated+Tweet+With+Plus+Acting+As+Spaces"

and add: " &amp;url="

and then finally, add your public campaign link from social settings. (located in Step 3 of establishing your campaign details. For example: "https://campaigns.mail2app.lynch2.com/CSB/Public/archive.aspx?args=MTI0NjM4NTU%3d"

So the end result will be:
" http://twitter.com/share?text=Prepopulated+Tweet+With+Plus+Acting+As+Spaces&amp;url=https://campaigns.mail2app.lynch2.com/CSB/Public/archive.aspx?args=MTI0NjM4NTU%3d"

You can now apply this link to an image or text. When recipients click on the link, if logged in to Twitter, the compose tweet dialogue will open with your pre-populated tweet message and a link to your email campaign. Remember the 140 character limit!
